Mr. Robertson Goes to Vegas Part 3

By in

Last time I explained how I decided to take my Deathwatch Space Marines to the 2018 Las Vegas Open 40kFriendly event. My friends Justin and Apostolos and I wanted originally to go for the narrative event but it was sold out within 12 hours of tickets going online. So that didn’t happen… The criteria for the 40k friendly was 100 power points, not matched play points, each army has to have a “theme”, and all missions are going to be maelstrom missions straight out of the book.

With these things kind of in the back of my mind I came up with my first list, 5 squads of terminators, a terminator captain, and a dreadnought. 1 squad of terminators would be 3 guys with lightning claws and 2 with thunder hammer/storm shield combo, the other 4 squads would have either 1 Cyclone missile launcher or 1 assault cannon, 1 heavy flamer, and 3 shmucks with power fists, melta guns and storm bolters. The Captain would have a relic blade and storm bolter, and the dreadnought would have twin las-cannon and missile launcher.

I had a few practice games against a buddy to moderate success, I found the terminators quite slow with their 5” movement and the close combat unit was too easily isolated and picked off. After discussing things with some friends it was suggested I change out a couple terminator units for something with a little more mobility. So I tweaked the list to drop the dedicated close combat squad and 2 units of terminators and instead replaced them with 2 5-man vanguard veteran squads, a 3 man bike squad, and a terminator librarian. The remaining squads were also re-tooled so the sergeants had  the thunder hammer/ storm shield combo, 2 units would have cyclone missile launchers, and one would have an assault cannon. While this likely solved my mobility problem it presented a new one, my cheap ass didn’t have all the models to make this work.

So I set out on a quest to wheel and deal for the bits and things this army would need, picking up a lot of sweet used stuff from friends and at bits swaps. Incidentally I discovered the pegs on the arms of the Assault on Black Reach dreadnought, yeah, not the same diameter as on a standard dread… At the time of writing this I am still missing a few odds and ends but have put in an order with a certain dapper gentleman who knows a guy who knows a guy that can get me what I still need.

Thus the list I have settled on is as follows:
